The Australian mango season has extended over the past decade due to being grown in different regions across Australia. It starts in the NT runs down the QLD coast and into northern NSW. Some are now being grown in Mildura (North VIc) for late season mangos.
Now in end Nov, the season is in full swing and mangos have been in the shops already for the past month.Up to mid November they have been coming from NT. They were higher priced than normal for early season due to a very light crop in NT.
The Burdekin (Ayr, Townsville, Bowen region) is starting in the last week of November and is looking like a good season. This will reflect in shop prices coming down. After Christmas both the Bundaberg region and Mareeba fruit will come in. Although Mareeba is north of Cairns, being on a high tableland it has a different weather to Cairns and fruit is ready the same time as southern fruit. Supply is also expected to be good for these regions. Fruit prices generally are high before Christmas with the festive season higher demand. This often falls markedly after Christmas with festivities being over. Do we not eat fruit after Christmas? Maybe there is not as much waste…
That is this year’s mango market wrap up as we see it. Happy healthy eating.
