If you love the sweet taste that is Gin Gin & Dry’s dried pineapple, we’d love for you to meet our pineapple grower.
In this next blog, we get to know Peter Maywald, how long he’s been growing pineapples and what he likes most about the Gin Gin & Dry product range.
Dried Pineapple: Meet Our Pineapple Grower
Peter Maywald has a pineapple farm in Childers, Queensland where he has been growing pineapples for a total of 45 years, 33 of those years on his own farm.
On his farm, he grows both smooth and hybrid pineapples with his fruit well-known for its quality.
What do you love about the industry?
I like the fact this industry is one that is constantly challenging and that we see different issues every year.
Working with the Gin Gin & Dry Team
How long have you been supplying produce to Gin Gin & Dry?
I have been supplying fruit to Gin Gin & Dry since before they were even called Gin Gin & Dry, so approximately 10 years or more now.
What do you love most about working with Gin Gin & Dry?
I like the commitment to quality from Gin Gin & Dry.
Have you taste-tested the Gin Gin & Dry products? If yes, what’s your favourite?
After taste testing some of their products, my favourites of Gin Gin & Dry are all the pineapple and mango products.
Do you find that product waste is a big issue for your farm? Does working with Gin Gin & Dry help alleviate this issue?
Product waste is not a big issue for us. Normally, there are many different markets and specifications we send (dried, canned, fresh and juice.
Our fruit gets sent everywhere from Gin Gin through to New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Perth.
The bit of waste we have keeps the neighbours cows happy and they come running when they see the tractor coming.
What’s your favourite recipe or dish with pineapples?
My favourite recipe with pineapples is something I saw on a cooking show and is brilliant and easy.
Slice pineapple in long thin strips, rub mint leaves and sugar together with your fingers until the sugar turns green and sprinkle generously over the pineapple (my pineapples don’t need the sugar so tone down sugar and up the mint).
Leave to sit for approximately 20 minutes or longer in the fridge and serve.
