Mango Season Excitement!
Mango season Australia – Today we are going to chat about mangoes!
At Gin Gin & Dry, mango season is a much-anticipated event each year, and our delicious dried mangos are sought after from across the world.
It is our busiest time of year – our customers are excited by the summer mango season, and everybody is eagerly awaiting Christmas. At Gin Gin & Dry mango season = BUSY!
The Migrating Mango
Recently we shared with you the process of producing our dried pineapple products, and the dried mango process is very similar.
There is one major difference, though. Our mangoes aren’t sourced from just one grower; they come to us from many different growers and several different regions across Australia.
And there is a good reason for this! The nature of mango season in Australia is that it is transitory, i.e., it migrates! Who would have thought, right?
Mangoes appear ripe for picking across the Australian tropics at varying times due to seasonal temperatures and rainfall.
When is Mango Season in Australia?
In Australia, seeing mangoes appearing on the shelves of your local supermarket and greengrocer instils excitement into every kid’s heart. Why? Is it the promise of that tender yellow flesh bursting with flavour? Not really. Is it the thought of that sweet smell and delicious juiciness? Hmm, probably not.
The truth is that kids across Australia get butterflies in their tummies when they realise mango season is upon us because, well, it heralds in the countdown to Christmas. Santa is on his way!
The appearance of ripe mangos indicates summer. To us, summer means Christmas! (Sorry to all of our readers from the Northern Hemisphere, but that’s how we do it here in Oz).
If you grew up in North Queensland, as summer kicked in, you would begin to see local producers parked along highways selling boxes and trays of mangoes from their trucks. It would be accompanied by sticky, sultry weather and the smell of rain on bitumen. Dark clouds encircled by a warm glow as the sun tried to poke through the building storm.
Summer in the tropics means humidity, dark skies, mangoes and soaking, life-giving rain!
Summer Mangoes Ripe for Picking
The mango season follows the wet season across the tropics. The season is quite short and only runs from September to January each year. It begins in the Northern Territory, travels across the Top End, down the Queensland coast and concludes right here in our region of Bundaberg.
Each locality has a 2-4 week window for their golden, juicy goodness to be ripe for the picking, and then production moves to the next region.
It is for this reason that our mangoes do not come from a single grower. Mango season in Australia is a true community effort – in fact, it is an effort that supports many different communities!
Here is a short refresher on the process of producing our yummy dried fruit products here at Gin Gin & Dry…
- Select and order the juiciest ripe mangos from the regional grower that has current availability according to the progress of the season.
2. Remove the skin and seed by hand.
3. Hand trim any remaining pieces from the mango.
4. Slice the mango using a machine for consistency in thickness.
5. Lay the sliced mango out onto drying trays in single layers. We do not add any additives or preservatives. It is just delicious juicy fruit picked straight from the tree.
6. The mango is placed into our dehydrating tunnels where the magic happens. It is dried with only heat and air. We do not add added sulphur or any other chemicals. Your mango is preserved just as it would be if it were left out in the sun to dry, we just speed up the process a little.
7. The completed dried mango is unloaded and vacuum-sealed into its packaging the next day to retain its flavour and freshness.
And that’s it! We have refined this process so that we can offer the most convenient, tasty and healthy snack foods around!
We believe that Mother Nature must know a bit about what she is doing so there is no need to add anything artificial to the fruits. They are perfection in their own right!
Aussie Christmas Treats
As you prepare your menu for Christmas this year, be sure to reserve a spot for the beloved mango! In Australia, no Christmas table would be completed without a Christmas ham, a roast chicken, a pavlova, and summer mango!
