How Do You Make Dried Pineapple Chunks – Well, spring is upon us, friends! It is time to come out of hibernation and celebrate the warmer weather. There is nothing more fitting for this than the flavour of sweet pineapple! Pineapple quite simply tastes like summer!
The mere scent of pineapple can spark memories of times gone by. If you grew up in Australia, you surely remember biting into a juicy piece of watermelon or pineapple in the middle of summer. The sweetness, the juice running down your arm, the sun beaming down! Nostalgia at its best! Pineapple is very versatile and is wonderful in many recipes. It has a plethora of health benefits, both in its fresh and dry forms.
The Gin Gin & Dry Pineapple Drying Process
When it comes to producing our dried pineapple, we do not compromise on quality or cut corners. Our pineapple begins as premium fresh produce carefully selected and sourced from our Queensland pineapple grower. We are spoilt for choice and extremely fortunate in Bundaberg to have such amazing growers surrounding us.
A common misconception is that dried fruit is produced from bruised, battered and “rejected” produce. This is very untrue! For dried fruit to be flavoursome, sweet, well-textured and beautifully coloured, it must be made from a fresh fruit that is the same!
Our pineapple drying process is one that we are very proud of. It is perfectly refined in its simplicity. The result is a delicious, healthy snack that has no additives, preservatives or flavourings. Every step is completed here in Queensland from the day the pineapple starts to grow.
How Do You Dry Pineapple?
So just how do you make dried pineapple chunks? You may be surprised that it is quite a simple process. However, every step is carefully planned and timed to achieve maximum flavour!
The first step, as mentioned above, is to obtain fresh pineapple from the best possible source. Our regional pineapple growers provide us with tasty, fresh pineapple to guarantee flavour. Also, this year, we have an extra treat! Our 2021 dried pineapple has been made from the super “Sweet Winter Variety”.
Remember the golden rule; tasty fresh fruit = tasty dried fruit!
Next, the drying process moves into full swing. These are the steps we follow to produce your Gin Gin & Dry dried pineapple products:
- Remove the pineapple core and skin with a machine
2. Hand trim any remaining skin pieces from the pineapples
3. Machine cut each pineapple piece so that they have a consistent thickness
4. Place the sliced pineapple onto drying trays. There is nothing added, of course; just plain cut beautiful fruit!
5. Dry the fruit in dehydrating tunnels – just heat and air. This means that there are no added sulphur or other nasties, just as nature intended!
6. Unload and pack dried fruit the very next day.
The process is really that simple – source, cut, tray, dry, pack. Dried fruits don’t need any additional treatment or additives. Mother Nature grew them perfectly!
