Welcome Mango Season
Mango season is here and with that our most busiest time of the year! Here in Australia our mango season marks the start of summer and soon after follows Christmas.
Our mangoes are sourced from different growers around different regions across Australia. This is because the ripening of mangoes follow the wet season across our tropics. It’s a very short season from September to January each year. Starting in the Northern Territory, through the Top End then down the coast of Queensland to finish here in our Bundaberg region.
Each area has a 2 to 4 week window where mangoes ripen for harvest. This is why we source our mangoes from multiple Australian growers. During mango season our production facility will process over 2 million mangoes! That’s a lot of juicy ripe mangoes!
This is also where mangoes were first cultivated for domestic use. The evergreen plants then made their way upon voyages to Asia, Middle East and Africa. Followed by South America and the Philippines then finally to Australia in the 1800s. Now it is one of the most highly cultivated fruits around the world.
There are now over 500 types of cultivated mango worldwide. All in which vary in size, shape, taste, skin and flesh colour. They can be pale yellow, gold, green, red, orange or a mix. Many of the varieties will ripen in the different summers, and some may even give a double crop!
The Cycle Of The Mango
Once planted from a seed, it takes up to 8 years for a mango tree to produce fruit.
They produce most reliably in areas with a dry winter and spring. Followed by rainfall during summer and preferably dry conditions as the fruit matures.
The flowers grow in loose branching clusters and are pollinated by various insects including moths, butterflies, native flies, beetles, bees, ants and even the wind. The string like stems will grow at their ends two or more mangoes. After flowering begins, it takes 3 to 5 months for the fruit to ripen. They are best picked while the fruit is mature, but not quite ripe at about 100 days after flowering.
Mango trees can grow to around 30 to 40 meters! But pruning helps to keep the trees at manageable size and encourages good fruit production.
The trees can live for well over 100 years and can still produce fruit in the later years of their life cycle. The oldest living mango tree discovered is 500 years old and still produces fruit. Read more about it here in The New Indian Express

Our Dried Mango
We source our mangoes from 25 growers, according to the progress of the current season. We then remove the skin and seed by hand, trim any remaining pieces, slice the mango using a machine for consistency, then lay out onto drying trays in single layers. Nothing is added and no preservatives, just as Mother Nature intended!
Our mango is preserved just as it would be if it was left out in the sun to dry, we have just speed up the process. We use heat and air in our dehydrating tunnels. The complete dried mango is unloaded and vacuum-sealed into packaging the next day to retain its flavour and freshness. And that’s it. We have refined our process so that we can offer you our customers the most convenient, tasty, healthy snack around.
